1944 English nurse Sibyl Lake is young but skilled and confident. Recruited as an SOE agent to assist the French Resistance, she is parachuted into the province of Alsace, which, on the border to Germany, has been annexed by the Nazis, and with a secret identity takes up residence in the town of Colmar. It turns out to be no coincidence that her main contact in France is Jacques, her childhood sweetheart, now a French Resistance fighter, risking his life to free his homeland from the German takeover.

Sibyl’s arrival has not gone unnoticed by Commander Wolfgang von Haagan, the commandant of the Colmar region. Immediately her mission becomes a different one, and far more dangerous. But Sibyl soon finds betrayal does not come easy to her. Commander von Haagen is a soldier who yearns for poetry, music, and confides to her misgivings about the war. Slowly Sibyl begins to enjoy the company of the man she’s spying on...
